Useful Information
The way we carry ourselves plays an integral part in our long-term health. Bad posture over prolonged periods of time can lead to numerous health conditions such back and neck pain, inability to tolerate a certain position for long periods of time and can even lead to difficulty in walking. The better your posture is the less your risk of developing these problems.
A new type of problem has arisen in recent years with the recent heavy usage of mobile devices. It now turns out that on an average, people spend minimum of 2 to 3 hours with their heads tilted forward because of mobile devices. This results in 700 to 1400 hours each year spent being hunched over. It is a worrying statistic with potentially serious health consequences. Continually having bad posture could lead to chronic, continual pain and even surgery.
What Doctors say about this?
A study published in the Surgical Technology International Journal revealed that the strain the spine has to carry increases as the neck is flexed. An adult person's head weighs anywhere between 4 to 5 Kg and as you bend your neck forward, this weight becomes an issue. When the neck is bent forward at greater than 90 degrees, the force on the spine can no longer be measured.
You can see the image which shows amount of pressure increases on your neck as soon as you start leaning forward to check mobile.
This pressure increases as high as 27 Kgs on your neck.
What to do to avoid strain on neck?
You can avoid these musculature problems caused by the bad posture by always sitting and standing straight with your neck and back in a neutral position (at 0 degrees). This will have less stress on the spine, decreasing the risk of injuring your neck.
